Carteret County's Sole Hospital Scores A for Safety

Carteret Health Care Scores A for Safety

Carteret Health Care is excited to share with you that the Leapfrog Group recently released its Hospital Safety Score for hospitals across the country and Carteret Health Care received a score of 3.341 which is an “A” in this latest release.

Dick Brvenik, Carteret Health Care CEO shared, “This score reflects our continuous commitment to quality and safe care and is an impressive accomplishment for each and every staff member associated with Carteret Health Care that includes our hospital staff, medical staff and our board.”

According to information from The Leapfrog Group, the numerical scores this fall ranged between 1.546 and 3.669. Carteret Health Care’s 3.341 is well above the average score of 3.0 and is in the top 31% of hospitals.

For Carteret Health Care, this comes after other achievements such as being selected as one of the Best Hospitals by Business North Carolina and recognition for improving more rapidly over the most recent five years than 98.5% of hospitals nationwide by Truven Health Analytics. Equally notable recent announcements include recognitions by The Joint Commission for our Advanced Primary Stroke Center Disease Specific Certification Program and for Total Hip and Total Knee Disease Specific Certification Programs.

The Leapfrog Group is a not for profit organization that provides information for the benefit of the public on hospital compliance with process measures, structural measures and outcome measures to help patients make best choices in selecting hospitals. The report uses some readily available data such as the CMS core measures, data from the American Hospital Association, and the Leapfrog Group’s own surveys. Our previous score from Spring of 2014 was a 3.00 (B).

The Leapfrog Group website was updated on October 28 with these new Safety Scores. The community is encouraged to visit the website at to review this information in greater detail. The hospital’s website at also contains other quality and safety information regarding Carteret County’s sole hospital.

Brvenik concludes, “Our board of directions, staff and physicians, all take great pride in these awards, accomplishments and recognitions, because ultimately it is our patients and community that benefit.”
