With great sadness, Carteret Health Care and the Carteret Health Care Foundation have lost a dear friend, Joan Lamson of Pine Knoll Shores. Mrs. Lamson was truly dedicated to healthcare and Carteret Health Care. She served as Carteret Health Care (then Carteret General Hospital) Board of Director from 2007 until 2012. She graciously and vigorously served on several committees including Planning, Building and Grounds, Community Relations, Audit Committee, Quality Improvement and Patient Safety, Compliance committee.

Mrs. Lamson is remembered as a strong advocate of quality improvement and she was very involved in the development of the hospital’s mission, vision and value statement. When Mrs. Lamson spoke, people wanted to listen and learn.

Mrs. Lamson’s prior service on the corporate board was a stepping stone for her to later become co-chairman of the Foundation’s highly successful Capital Campaign to build Carteret Health Care’s new Cancer Center which opened in 2015. The Foundation’s Cancer Indigent fund was renamed in her honor as the Joan Lamson Benevolent Fund to assist cancer patients with medications, travel expenses, medical supplies and other necessities needed during cancer in 2018.

Her voice and spirit will live forevermore in the Carteret Health Care Cancer Center. She is known to have said, “We have a responsibility to ensure a healthier and hopeful future for our community.” We all know that Carteret County is a better place after having known Mrs. Lamson.
