Summer Externships
What is an externship?
Externships are short-term work experience programs aimed at easing professional transitions. They provide students with practical experience that complements research and school-based theoretical learning. Carteret Health Care supports college students on their academic journey through our Paid Summer Externship Program.
An externship allows students to:
- Explore a career field in their major and experience a short extended period of working on the job over an eight-week period in the summer.
- Learn how to apply their academic major through discussions with professionals who have a similar background
- Explore a career field hands-on
- Immerse themselves in a workplace environment while applying themselves to tasks and projects
- Apply skills learned from their studies to responsibilities relevant to their industry of interest
- Expand their knowledge of what it is like to work inside a specific field while under the guidance of industry professionals
- Assess their "fit" for a particular position or organization
- Make career connections and strengthen their network
- Add value to their resume
Externships may vary each summer depending on need in the hospital.

Internships are available upon requests and if the department is needing a semester long internship within a major. Internships usually require a certain number of hours and come with guidelines from a college or university.
