About Dr. Rusthoven

Dr. Chad G. Rusthoven is a board-certified radiation oncologist. He earned his undergraduate degree from the University of Florida and medical degree from the University of South Florida College of Medicine. He completed his medical internship at the Georgetown/Washington Hospital Center program and his radiation oncology residency at the University of Colorado. Prior to coming to Carteret Health Care, he was a full-time faculty member at University of Colorado School of Medicine from 2015 - 2022. Dr. Rusthoven holds adjunct faculty appointments at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and the University of Colorado.

Dr. Rusthoven is an active medical researcher and serves as the principal investigator of the SWOG S1827 “Maverick” phase 3 randomized trial evaluating brain MRI surveillance with or without prophylactic cranial irradiation (PCI) for patients with small-cell lung cancer (SCLC) (https://clinicaltrials.gov/study/NCT04155034), and as the co-principal investigator of the NRG CC009 phase 3 randomized trial of stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS) versus hippocampal-avoidant whole-brain radiotherapy for brain metastases from SCLC (https://clinicaltrials.gov/study/NCT04804644 ). He has published over 100 peer-reviewed manuscripts, including original research in leading oncology journals such as the Journal of Clinical Oncology (JCO), JAMA Oncology, Annals of Oncology, and the Journal of the National Cancer Institute (JNCI).

Dr. Rusthoven has served on a number of leading guidelines committees including the National Comprehensive Cancer Network (NCCN) practice guidelines for Small Cell Lung Cancer and Central Nervous System Cancers, the American Society for Radiation Oncology (ASTRO) practice guidelines for brain metastases, and American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) guidelines panel for stereotactic radiation in early-stage lung cancer.

Dr. Rusthoven has received a number of awards, including the National Merit Scholarship, Alpha Omega Alpha (AOA) Honor Medical Society for academic excellence, Gold Humanism Honor Society, and is a recipient of the Dr. Charles A Coltman Jr research fellowship award.

Dr. Rusthoven has expertise in the treatment of tumors of the lung, brain, breast, prostate and genitourinary system, head & neck, gastrointestinal, GYN, lymphoma, sarcoma, and metastases, with a special interest in focused stereotactic body radiation therapy (SBRT) and stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS).
